Nielsen’s latest Global Trust in Advertising Report says word-of-mouth is the single best, most effective, long-term type of marketing in the world.
Well that’s great news! Direct Selling is based 100% on recommendations from friends, on word-of-mouth marketing.
The Nielsen report repeats findings from previous years – people don’t trust advertising. What do they trust? Recommendations from friends.
When it comes to swaying consumers, nothing beats word of mouth. That’s because, 92% of people trust recommendations from friends and family above all other forms of advertising when making a purchase decision. That number was up nearly 20% from 2007.
Those findings, however, only begin to highlight the changing advertising model. According to research by Nielsen, less than half of all people still find paid traditional media credible. Since 2009 the credibility of advertising has dropped 24% for television, 20% for magazines, and 25% for newspapers. The numbers are even worse for internet and mobile advertising.
Word-of-mouth has existed for over a thousand years. Other forms of marketing, such as TV, radio, newspapers, billboards, banner ads, email marketing, mobile text marketing, etc have had much shorter life spans, some have gone extinct, some are on their way to being extinct. Word-of-mouth on the other hand will probably exist for another thousands years.
Instead of spending money in the local newspaper or TV advertising, Direct Selling companies give their advertising budget to people like you and me for spreading the word. They share all these profits with you and give you a word-of-mouth bonus check for all of your network marketing, for recommending and promoting their products.
